Witty Women Wednesday, Lily Tomlin - The woman that made me move with laughter!

picture from http://www.biography.com/people/lily-tomlin-9508630
This is a wonderful Detroit, Michigan woman that has surely pushed into a guys world and made it better for many more of us women down the line.  Above is one of her characters Ernestine the cranky telephone operator.
The thing was with Lily, she did not go right into acting after high school.  She took a traditional path after attending Cass Tech High School she went off to college.  In a matter of fact it was as serious as Medical School at Wayne State University in Detroit.  As every college student knows academia want students to take more classes so that they are more well rounded student.  So while taking the medical classes, she took theater & art classes.  During breaks in studying, she would go to the local coffee houses and perform.  Thank goodness she moved to New York and started at places like the Improv, and Cafe Au Go Go because her crazy wit and cast of characters she had created have left many in stitches.            Please watch the clips!  They are smashing!

Picture from http://www.c-ville.com/arts-pick-lily-tomlin/#.Vs3v5xird2s
Her list of career achievements are long and a beautiful sight to see especially in the beginning.
  • The Garry Moore Show 1966
  • Merv Griffin Show
  • The Music Scene
  • Laugh-In 1969-1973
With being in Laugh-in that was when she created the character of Ernestine the telephone operator and Edith Ann a into everything 6 year old.  During the development of the character Edith Ann, Lily was looking for a writer to develop her and me her now partner, Jane Wagner.  There was a quick connection both for them personally and professionally.  It is cool that when you go looking for one thing you can get another.  Being open minded is always a good way to be!

If you don't know about laugh-in, check it out on Youtube.

One of the movies I remember most is the 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton, and Jane Fonda working for a guy with crappy morals and in the circle of the male dominated system.  They did some crazy things to get their point across, but it is Hollywood, so they create some interesting stuff.  The write up on IMDb states, "Three female employees of a sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot find a way to turn the tables on him".  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080319/.

In the next clip, Violet finds out she gets passed over for yet another promotion. https://youtu.be/QNnRamMk7xo
This clip is pretty identifiable.  In my life I have been there but when something like that makes the big screen it feels pretty good just to laugh.  Without laughter life can become pretty depressing.

A more recent venture, 2015, of Lily's has been a series on Netflix called Gracie & Frankie and a big screen movie Grandma where a teenager is facing an unplanned pregnancy.  She seeks help from her  grandmother, a woman who is long estranged from her daughter. Also staring in the Grandma flix is the always sexy Sam Elliot.  The movie is a must see for me and it should be a blast for anyone who loves to see the diversity of the actress!

Below is the link to IMBd in regards to the information about the movie Grandma written by Paul Weitz

Sometimes when you like an artist many times it is best to watch the clips to really enjoy their work the best.

Congrats to Lily and Jane for tying the knot New Years Eve of 2014 Where they were married in a private ceremony in Los Angeles, California!
Thank you Lily for the laughs and pushing though the crap to make it good for our Detroit gal!

Manic Monday

As you lay yourself to sleep
Praise whom you hold
 in your heart so deep.
If you should cry yourself to sleep
I pray that it will be
    only for sweet release.
Of the bad, the hurt and the pain of the day
To rise yourself for another day.
In song to sing
angels do bless
a song of nightly harmony
Love exuding from your chest.
From where you are
from now, for you to lay
The song of sweet dreams
To eternity they may.

So as you sleep until the dawn
Pleasant dreams may they
fill your heart with song,
Soft beats of rhythms
let them turn to psalms.
With your love of the light
to a true always heart,

what does yours long?

Do the drink - is there one better than another?

What boosts you?  I looked a quite a few drinks and boost is one that I like because to me the flavor is better and I feel fuller longer.  This is not the same for everyone so here is what I found about the drinks.

******Remember, I am not a doctor or dietitian so please if you have any medical questions please talk to your doctor before beginning a diet with anyone of these drinks.*******

Which one is better?  There is so many different diet drinks on the shelves how can we tell what is good for us.  As for me, I am a diabetic and many of the weight control drinks have so much sugar I can't have many of them.

One of the best answers is always water.  Water is no calories and you can add fresh fruit or veggies for different flavors.

Foodie Friday, for the Love of PASTA

Gnocchi

For the love of pasta!  I enjoy it so much! So when I found a Gnocchi recipe in it I had to try.  It is so cool this book because it give you a variety of ingredients to use.  I like to mix and match my ingredients because if I don't have something, they have another option to try and besides my pantry can get a little bare so I have to improvise.  To me it taste like little balls of light fluff with cheese.  MMMMMMM
The beginning of this recipe is what you do do make the nun puff recipe I have so try you hand at that too.  Maybe I just like too much cheese and noodle.

NUN PUFF link
http://silverwineadditions.blogspot.com/2015/12/special-days-nun-puffs-for-breakfast.html

So here is what you do!
Preheat oven 350 degrees
Prep time 30 minutes                        Bake time 30 minutes

Ingredients:
1 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
1 cup all purpose flour
3 eggs
1 can (10 3/4 to 11 ounce) condensed soup *
Liquid (will equal to a cup) *
1/2 cup shredded cheese*
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese
Garnish *

*these are the ingredients that can be varied (see below)

* for recipe
a.  cream of onion soup,
     light cream (liquid),
     Swiss cheese,
     paprika (garnish)

b. Cream of celery soup,
1/2 cup dry white wine (liquid),  plus 1/2 cup milk (liquid),
    Gruyere cheese,
    nutmeg (garnish)

c. Cream of chicken soup,
    1 cup evaporated milk (liquid),
    American cheese,
    toasted sesame seeds (garnish)

d. Cheddar cheese soup,
1/2 cup beer (liquid), plus 1/2 cup water (liquid),
    sharp cheddar cheese
    chopped fresh parsley (garnish)

1.  In a 2-quart saucepan put in the 1st milk and butter.  On a medium heat, when it starts to bubble add all the flour all at once and stir in until a soft ball forms.  Set aside to cool.

2.  In a big pan put water into it to boil.  This is to put the gnocchi in to cook.

3. With the dough in the pan, when cooled for about 10 minutes, add eggs one at a time and stir in fully.  Cover and cool for a little longer.

4.  Take the dough and roll 1/2 inch ball shapes with your fingers.  Set them on wax paper until the whole dough ball is done.  Then put them in the boiling water.

5.  After about 3 minutes, the dough balls will float to the surface.  Take a holey spoon and take out the gnocchi from the water and put them in the baking dish.

6. In another saucepan on medium heat, the soup and the liquid, stirring constantly.  Add the cheese and heat it until it is all melted in.  Pour this sauce over the gnocchi.

7.  Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and the garnish.

8.  Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.

Next time I will see what it will take to fix my newest try at the kitchen.  Homemade noodles with a cream sauce.

Blogger Friday,

Is the content of your blog too little, too big or just write? If you say yes, then you need to break it apart in a clean organized way so your readers can take in all the good information you are trying to share. What draw others into your site?  There are so many pictures that just make you want to see what is being said, so at least for me, I click and read. I love when an article pulls me off of what I am doing because I get curious. Have you ever just wrote down what you look for in a day and what you actually read?  I do find that the pictures and the keywords to an article make me want to check it out further. So how can we begin to make our blog better. Take those ques from other pages. Did you read the whole article after the initial click to it?
In 2014, Googles statistics for searches done per day were shown 5,740,000,000! WOW!  Google has grown from 1998 where their searches done per day were a mere 9,800.  Take note of what you are searching for in a day and really see what it is that interest you.

Check out these first 6 tips from Haley Marketing groups ideas from their article 50 Ways to Grab Attention

  1. Write headlines in the form of a question. People just can't resist answering a question-even if they only respond to themselves.
  2.  Create headlines with "ego appeal." Everyone wants to be respected and liked and will gladly read beyond a headline which promises how to accomplish this.
  3.  Use "you" in your headline and beyond to involve the reader and personalize your copy.
  4.  Be brief. Get your point across in the fewest number of words possible if you want to grab and keep the reader's attention.
  5.  Use sidebars to draw attention to important points and for visual relief.
  6.  Use buzzwords like FREE, SALE, WINNER, and GUARANTEED to get people emotionally involved and excited.

Dictionary, thesaurus, synonyms & antonyms
Break up your information:
  • Always put breaks to your information by using pictures, different size letters, bullet points, quotes, links and headers.  This helps pause the input going in to your reader so they can stay interested.  Pictures say 1,000 word, quotes can bring a different insight to your material.  Make the picture sing about the information with detail and captions.
  • Link can help the reader feel you are really looking out for them by making sure they have the full information.
  • Use bold, italic and underlines to emphasize specific words and phrases.

Do not rush your article:
This makes it easy to make mistakes, misspelled words and it could make your article incomplete. Read and reread your article so it is coherent, precise, to the point and does not run on.  If you have to, read the article out loud.  If you stumble on what you wrote, than it needs a quick rewrite.  Many people reading blogs understand when stuff is a little off but when you are working up to become a more professional writer you need to have quality content to offer future employers and professional clients.

Research everything thoroughly:
Giving out misinformation can make you look bad and it could mislead your readers in a direction that may not lead them back to you.  When you do research on what you are writing, it makes development of your article easier to write because you end up with more drive with a better understand of a subject.

Don't plagiarize:
As we have seen from an article that Justina put up about using others pictures in our blog, remember to never use other people content without citing your source. If you feel that you cannot write a better article than someone else has check with the author to see if you can use their information verbatim.  There is a website is software that checks content of an article.  It is called Copyscape and it will check to see if you have used other peoples information (copyscape.com)

I am and have been doing a lot of research for my classes in school. Citing your sources is so important because think about it, if someone copied your work as their own it sure would hurt, you would not be recognized, and they may get all the readers instead of you.
On the flip side, I am still working on my site, boy am I slow but keep priorities in line for what needs to be done on a daily basis. Keep your calender and planners updated and marked. Next time, you tell me what you want to see for blogging! I am here for you and we need to help each other out so, let me do that for you.
Come by and check me out, leave me a message or follow me at silverwineadditions.blogspot.com
Have a great valentines weekend!

Witty, Wednesday! I love you, LUCY!

http://lovethoseclassicmovies.blogspot.com/2012/05/in-pictures-lucille-ball.html
http://lovethoseclassicmovies.blogspot.com/2012/05/in-pictures-lucille-ball.html

Ability is of little account without opportunity.

Lucille Ball

August 6, 1911 to April 26, 1989

Born in Jamestown, New York she was the older of 2 children to Desiree and Henry Durrell.  Her brothers' name was Fred an was born after his dad had passed away.  .  There were two moves before her dad died, one to Montana and the other to Michigan then her dad contracted typhoid fever and died.  Life was not easy even at the precious age of 3.  Her mother did remarry but after a little while that new husband convinced Lucy’s mom Desiree to move to Detroit without her kids.  Lucy lived with her step dads parents and Fred, just born, moved in with Desiree’s parents.  Lucy remembered not having enough money for even the simplest school supplies.

Use a make-up table with everything close at hand and don't rush; otherwise you'll look like a patchwork quilt. -  Lucille Ball

After her mother returned back to New York, Lucy convinced her to let her attend, at the age of 15, the New York City Drama School. She could not get past her shyness up on stage, at least compared to another student Bette Davis. After a while the school actually sent Lucy's mother a letter saying that she was a waste of time.  While staying in the New York area in 1927, she changed her name to Diane Belmont.  She would work as a model for a fashion designer and over came Rheumatoid Arthritis.  In the early 1930 she dyed her hair to chestnut blonde and headed for Hollywood.

Love yourself first and everything else fall in line. You will really have to love yourself to get anything done in the world.  - Lucille Ball

After doing many movies in 1942, she dyed her hair to red.   Some of these many movies ended up being B rated movies and her dream of hitting it big started to dwindle.  Here real break came when she started the radio show, My Favorite Husband because her husband Dezi constant push and backing her up 100%.  Even if he has his issues, it seems to me, that he never doubted her talent.  So during 1948 though 1951 they were the golden voice of radio.  CBS saw money in the mist so here they went to the motion picture business of television appearances.

http://lovethoseclassicmovies.blogspot.com/2012/05/in-pictures-lucille-ball.html
She had two marriages one to Desi Arnaz from 1940 to 1960 than to Gary Morton from 1961 to 1989.  Two is pretty darn good!  She had a daughter Lucie Desiree Arnaz and a son Desiderio Alberto (Dezi) Arnez Jr. with her first husband.

Her big moves of life were that she was the first woman to head a major Hollywood studio, Desilu, which produced many shows that are now done over and over again in Hollywood.  Some names you may have heard about are Star Trek, Mission Impossible, and The Untouchables.  Other classics include the Andy Griffith Show, My Favorite Martian, the Dick Van Dyke Show and Make room for Daddy.

I think knowing what you cannot do is more important than knowing what you can. - Lucille Ball

He push it for Lucy and after their radio show,  the television The I Love Lucy Show was big on CBS from 1951 to 1957; than there was The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour from 1957 to 1960; The Lucy show from 1962 to 1968; and Here’s Lucy from 1968 to 1974.

She was awarded 20 Emmy, which 7 were awarded to her after her death.
She was awarded 5 Motion Picture Daily Awards, the one in 1954 was with Desi Arnaz for the Best comedy team.  That doesn’t surprise me, even my kids found out whom Lucy was and enjoyed watching her along with The Three Stooges.

I would rather regret things I have done, than regret things I have not done. - Lucille Ball

I think that watching Lucy when I was younger made me feel that leggy red-head could do more than model and be a business woman than I could too.  She was in an atmosphere that could have crippled her into submission many times over.  I am sure there were days that she had, like the rest of us, she was ready to give up.  There probably were moments of weakness that showed up in the public eye more than any of ours, but I am sure a laugh of sarcasm worked its way in there too.

I hate failure and that divorce was a Number One failure in my eyes. It was the worst period of my life. Neither Desi nor I have been the same since, physically or mentally.

 - Lucille Ball

She did pretty well for a poor girl from crappy beginnings.  Let’s look at that example and dream big, go for what we want and even if we have to reinvent ourselves, lets just keep going!

Thank you, Lucy!

Manic Monday, Positive Thoughts and Quotes

"Give your soul a break," your soul is parts of your mind, will, and emotions.  We can become weary and then our strength becomes exhausted, and our strength and vigor can become drained.  Take a break and recharge by resting both your body and soul at one within your higher power.  As Joyce Meyers  states in her book Love out Loud, 365 devotions for loving God, Loving Yourself and Loving others.  In this book for February 8th she writes that discouragement crushed hope and our enemy tries hard to get us discouraged.

I say, don't let the evil of life win!  We are important in our own way so yell it out loud and rejoice in what gifts you have and the live you lead. We are a work in progress and the light of love will lead the way.   If you don't like that something in your life, change it or reconstruct what you believe to the be truth.  Do it with a loving heart and keep your mind open to new ideas and experiences.

Psalms 62:5
Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.

In another book, "Offer yourself freely" states Joyce Meyers in her book for February 8th of Starting Your Day Right, Devotions for each Morning of the year.  She gives us the thought that so many things we should bring to Him of our free will for all that he has given us.
So give everyone you meet a hello, of a smile just so it can catch on and make what you do and where you are better everyday.  A smile can always help!

2 Corinthians 2:15
We are the sweet fragrance of Christ {which exhales} unto God.

Psalms 27:14
Wait on the Lord; be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord!

You are:
    Good Enough
    Strong Enough
    Brave enough
and can be in control only if you let your Higher power take over to guide you!

Have a great night!

The cards, a Tarot of a thought - where did it begin?

1. Rider-Waite Deck
Some look at tarot as a mystical deck of angel driven answers.  Then others feel that it is just the tool of the Devil!  When people make these misconceptions those who seal with the tarot need to give out the correct information.  It is just like saying that guns kill people.  You can put a gun on the table and not touch it, will it hurt someone?  Is it not the way the person deals with the gun?  Or in another instance, the pit bull is a killer.  No, it is the inbreeding and people who push that breed into something that they are not.  Sorry to go off on a tangent but making the decisions with knowledge based facts is better then we can open up our heads and hearts to the learning of what is truth.

Tarot cards were just the old time playing cards.  They entered Europe in the 14th century from the trading done in between Asia and Italy.  From there it traveled to France.  One of the early decks was Visconti-Sforza's Tarocchi Deck and it is still available today. The name was described by Feliciano Busi as being from the areas of Saracinia which is the land of the Saracens or Arabia. The civilizations of Moorish Spain had many intellectual exchanges between the European people and the middle east.

Some people linked the word tarot as Idries Shah did in his book the Sufis to that of
Sufism or Tasawwuf ( is defined as the inner mystical dimension of Islam. Practitioners of Sufism (Tasawwuf), referred to as Sufis (ṣūfī) often belong to different turuq or "orders"—congregations formed around a grand master referred to as a Mawala who maintains a direct chain of teachers back to the Prophet Muhammad.

In this game there were:
Major Arcana Cards (22) -  that was said to hold secret symbolic meanings for Surfis wo influenced the Kabala and later the tarot cards.
Minor Arcana (56) - These were similar to our 52 four card suits.  Since many of them can work the same with playing cards the Jack and the Knight, and the page is added into the Tarot deck.

The Tarot was actually a card game called Tarocchi and no fortunes were told from that game.  It was not until the 18th century that the actual fortune notion was given its purpose.

Myths that are just not true:

  • No Egyptians were involved in use of procreating this type of spiritual readings
2. Different type of deck
  • Tarot cards existed before the Gypsies made it to Europe.
  • They were thought to be the "Devil Cards" only because people used to gamble with cards.  At one point would even play cards during church.  So the "churchy" people condemned card as being evil because of those types of behaviors.
The many names of Tarot in the beginning:
Atouts - French
Attuti, Tarocchi, Trionfi - Italia

Now we see many types of different deck.  There are oracle decks, angel cards, Karma decks, law of attraction decks, Thoth Tarot, Mythic Tarot, Golden Dawn Deck, Illuminati Deck, Enchanted Decks, Jungian Deck, Shadows Deck, Native American Deck, Hermetic Tarot, and there is even a D.C. Comic Justice League deck. Check out each deck and look at the reviews before committing to one.

******As with anything ask for guidance from your higher power especially when dealing with anything that is of the mystical or supernatural nature.  Stay true to yourself, your morals, virtues and convictions.  I am not advocating that this is for everyone but I just wanted to give out the information so you can make an informed decisions on the Tarot.***********************

One of the most used decks has been the Rider-Waite Deck by A.E. Waite & Pamela Colman-Smith and there are quite a few books and guides to help people learn each deck.  So check out what kinds of things interest you.  Don't be scared to gain knowledge because ignorance can be hurtful.

Knowledge is power!

WordPress, who’s the press with words?

Get it out there! Who is this WordPress? It seems like every book I have looked at gives a step by step about the WordPress ins and outs. Many times it can be all about the money. There is much information about getting a domain and whom they went with for that domain name with puts them right in the path of WordPress. I did not follow the books, go figure, only because I was looking for a cheap price on domain names. While looking for that first step in domain names, I used the search bar to look up web host with the best price and the best user-friendly site. There is a list from different sources and each would give their own best estimate from their own experiences. That is what the web has come down to. Who are you going to listen to and if you have to pay for there advise how much is it really worth? Will you end up with a lemon of a site?

There is a consumer reports that has for years done this type of thing in a book and now it is online and for a price. For some, having the bloggers opinion is still better than paying. Remember when you accept the information from someone that is not in a specific field it could be only what works best for them. Try checking their educational and professional backgrounds a little. If that person is a computer programmer many sites will be easier to navigate than other and compared to the novice, such as myself, just dabbling on the computer may not end up with the same results. Of course certain sites will be better than others. So make sure when looking at what is there and better you know where your source is coming from and their range of experience.
WordPress is an open source content to management system (CMS). This means that any kind of website or blog can be built and managed with it. It would be helpful to know that if you can do one thing in all, than do all in one thing. This was specifically designed for the management of websites. It allows users to control the entire layout functional workings of it and the contents of their website. This service has been up and running for over 10 years and there is limitless options with the site. You can build your blog, portfolio sites, e-commerce sites, membership sites, business/service sites and it goes on. Because there is a pooling of resources on this site that is what makes it more manageable in the long run.
The cheapest or the best may be for some but not for others can really get you confused. I was taken back the first time I looked at WordPress because I did not want to spend the money. So I took the free option then. So recently when money could be spent somewhere else and thought you initially think you are getting a better deal. In the end, you may spend more money on the mistake by going somewhere else when you should have stuck with something that more people use and is trusted than the better money deal.

Even if you have a domain site and a host now what do you do from here? Well you have WordPress map it for you to the blog you create to your domain but that will cost you $13. If you go with just a WordPress platform it is free but free only give you 3 GB of space, a free blog, some advertising that you do not have control of, and community support. In the next level, which is the Premium, you can pay $8.25/month or $99 a year for 13 GB of space, direct email support, customer design, video press, no ads, a custom site address, free blog.

In the previous plans there is no e commerce, which is okay if you are just writing but what happens when you start to sell things? WordPress can give you a business format at $299 a year. This added price also can give you all of the benefits of the previous except they add video chat, e-commerce and unlimited storage space.

This is the option page for WordPress.
At the bottom it has a link to go over
the break downs of each and the benefits.

So I have my blog on WordPress and my domain somewhere else so than what? Combine them with the easy tool on WordPress, that extra $13. People will be redirected from the blog site to you regular site. Which can be good if it is fully operational. I am still working on mine and what a mess because I started another blog on the eHost site, one on WordPress and still have my initial one that I have been using because using on Google. I can't get it all together. I could use another me some days!
In this one book, How to Create a Website using WordPress by Brian Patrick, gives you steps how to change your servers name but when I went through the eHost site, I am not finding a way to change that information like he states. I had a lot of options to buy more products from eHost but to change the hosting domain is not working for me. I am able to get WordPress to go to my domain but that is where it ends.
So next week, we will see how far I have traveled in my website, blog and such and see if I can get it going. I was hoping to be further by the end of January but now, mmmm, February. We will also talk about clean lines and what can draw your readers eye to you.
See you next time, but until then always come by and check me out at silverwineadditions.blogspot.com (for now)
Have a great week!
